The snap ring seats into a machined groove to hold a shaft, bearing or bushing in a fixed axial position, preventing it from walking out of its bore under load. It provides positive mechanical retention without the need for threaded fasteners.

## 🛠️ Service Notes

-   Always fit a new snap ring rather than reusing the one you removed — a ring that has been sprung open once has lost tension
-   Use proper snap-ring pliers and open the ring no further than it needs to go; overstretching it, or levering it in with a screwdriver, leaves it slack in the groove
-   Clean the groove and check it for wear, burrs or spread before fitting, and make sure the ring snaps fully home right the way round — check it by eye, turning the assembly, not just by feel
-   Where the ring has a chamfered or dished face, fit it the right way up with the sharp edge against the load
-   Account for the old ring and any fragments; a piece of broken circlip left inside a gearcase or housing will do serious damage
