-   Return each rod to its own bore and its original orientation, with its own cap the right way round — caps are machined with their rod and are not interchangeable
-   Fit new connecting rod bolts unless the manual for your engine expressly permits reuse, and follow its torque-plus-angle sequence exactly; these fasteners are stretched into place, and a reused or mis-tightened bolt is a thrown rod
-   Measure the journals, the bearing shells and the rod's big-end and small-end bores against the figures in the manual for your engine, and check the rod for bend and twist before it is used
-   Fit the shells clean and dry into their seats with the locating tabs home, then oil only the running faces — never scrape, shim or adjust a bearing shell
-   Lubricate the bolt threads and faces only as the procedure specifies, and check the rod turns freely with the correct side clearance before moving on
