## 🔌 Function

The split pin passes through a drilled hole and its legs are bent apart, mechanically preventing a nut or pin from rotating or sliding out. It is a positive locking device that does not rely on friction.

## ⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

-   Pin found sheared, corroded or missing on inspection
-   Castellated nut backing off or clevis pin working out
-   Legs fatigued or broken from being bent and reused
-   Elongation or wear of the drilled hole
-   Any refitted pin, which should be replaced as a matter of course

## 🛠️ Service Notes

-   Always fit a new split pin; a pin that has been opened and closed once has work-hardened and its legs will break off in service
-   Use the pin size specified for the hole so it fills it without slack — an undersized pin lets the nut or clevis move and will wear through
-   Pass the pin fully through, then bend the legs firmly around the nut or shaft so nothing can catch on them, and trim them back rather than leaving long ends
-   Check that the castellated nut, clevis or fork is at its correct setting before the pin goes in — the pin locks the setting, it does not create it
-   Inspect the hole and the surrounding component for wear and elongation from a previously loose or missing pin
