-   Clean both joint faces and the pipe bore before fitting, and check the bore for corrosion, scale and debris that would otherwise be carried onward
-   Fit new gaskets, seals or O-rings at the joints rather than reusing the old ones
-   Check the pipe for cracks, chafe damage and thinning, particularly at clamps, brackets and bends and anywhere it runs close to another component
-   Offer the pipe up and start all its fasteners before tightening any, so it is not pulled into strain, then tighten evenly to the figures in the workshop manual for your engine
-   Refit every bracket and support, and check clearance from moving parts and hot surfaces before running
