-   Support the component solidly and drive the pin straight along its bore with a pin punch of the correct size — a pin started at an angle burrs the bore and locks up
-   Check the holes in the two parts line up and the bore is clean and free of burrs before you start
-   Fit a new pin rather than reusing one that has been driven out; a spring pin loses its grip once it has been collapsed and expanded
-   Drive it to the same depth as the original so it sits flush and cannot foul or catch a moving part
-   Where the pin retains a shaft, lever or roller, check the joint moves freely afterwards and that the pin is properly captive
