-   Clear debris, salt and oily deposits from the grille and from the space behind it whenever it is off — a partly blocked grille restricts the airflow it exists to pass
-   Check that the grille locates fully in its aperture and that all its clips and fasteners are present, as a partly retained grille will vibrate and wear its mountings
-   Tighten fasteners into plastic or thin sheet gently, enough to hold the grille without distorting or cracking it
-   Refit the grille before the engine is run; as well as passing air it guards against contact with what sits behind it
