-   Fit new gaskets, O-rings and seals on all joint faces, and use new locking devices on any linkage fasteners
-   Set linkage travel, stops and speed settings only to the values in the workshop manual for your engine; a governor set outside those limits can let the engine overspeed
-   Have the engine run up and the idle, maximum speed and shutdown behaviour checked by someone equipped to do it before the boat goes back into service
