-   Use the correct crimp tool and die for the terminal size — a ratcheting crimper is what makes a marine crimp reliable — and pull-test every finished crimp before it goes back in service
-   Strip only as much insulation as the barrel will take: no stray strands outside the barrel and no insulation trapped inside it
-   Seal the finished crimp against moisture, adhesive-lined heat shrink over the joint being the usual method on a boat
-   Crimp rather than rely on solder: solder alone is not an acceptable marine connection, and the stiff spot where the solder ends cracks the strands with vibration
-   Clean the mating post or pin to bright metal, tighten to the figure in the manual for your engine, and support the cable so vibration is taken by the clip and not by the terminal
