-   Set the shift cable or linkage so the lever reaches full travel and engages fully in both directions and returns cleanly to neutral — partial engagement burns a clutch quickly
-   Change the oil after the initial running-in period and then at your scheduled interval, checking it for water and for metal every time
-   Do not use the gear to hold the shaft while working on the propeller, and do not let the shaft turn under sail or tow unless the manual for your gear allows it
