## 🔌 Function

The seals retain gear oil inside the lower housing while excluding seawater at the rotating propeller shaft.

## ⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

-   Gear oil becomes milky
-   Oil leaks from the propeller-shaft area
-   Fishing line has damaged the seals
-   Propeller-shaft carrier is removed
-   Seal lips are hard, cut or grooved

## 🛠️ Service Notes

-   Use every ring the kit supplies and replace them all in one go; leaving one original ring in place is the usual reason a rebuilt unit leaks again
-   Lay the kit out against the parts you remove so each ring goes to the right joint, as kits often contain rings of very similar size
-   Clean each groove and seat and check it for scoring, corrosion and old sealant before the new ring goes in
-   Ease each ring into place without stretching, twisting or dragging it over sharp edges or threads, and check it is seated squarely before closing the joint
-   Add no sealant unless the workshop manual for your engine calls for it, and tighten the joints to the figures in that manual
