## 🛠️ Service Notes

-   Examine the sealing surface on the shaft or wear sleeve before fitting; a groove worn by the old seal will leak past a new one, and the workshop manual for your engine will say whether the surface may be reused, resleeved or must be renewed
-   Fit the seal with a driver or press that bears on its outer face all the way round, so it enters square and to the depth the manual specifies — a seal driven in cocked or too deep will leak
-   Many crankshaft seals use a PTFE lip that must be fitted completely dry, with no oil or grease on the lip or the shaft, and arrive with a plastic fitting sleeve that stays in place until the seal is home; check what the manual specifies before lubricating anything
-   Make sure the housing and seal seat are clean and undamaged, and take care not to fold or nick the lip as it passes over the shaft, keyway or shoulder
-   Check the crankcase ventilation and breather before blaming the seal; a blocked breather pressurises the crankcase and will push oil past a new seal just as it did the old one
