-   Set up the cable, linkage or trip so it operates cleanly from the operating position with no slack or binding, and make sure it can be reset afterwards
-   Make sure nothing can be drawn through or past the housing — loose gasket material downstream of the shutter goes straight into the engine
-   Test the shutdown function as the manual for your engine directs, and test it again whenever the inlet system is disturbed
