# 21493555 Heat Shield | Genuine Volvo Penta Part

## 🔧 Product Description

A formed thermal-protection panel used in the engine-cover assembly on Volvo Penta D13 marine propulsion engines. It is one of three separately numbered heat shields in the assembly and is shaped for its own mounting position; 21493555, 21493557 and 21493559 are not interchangeable.

## ⚙️ Key Features

- Genuine Volvo Penta formed engine-cover heat shield
- Limits radiant heat transfer from high-temperature engine and exhaust components
- Helps protect covers, wiring, hoses and nearby service components
- Mounts with dedicated grommets, spacers and flange screws
- Direct replacement for the corresponding panel in the D13 engine-cover assembly
- Engine type: 12.8L inline six-cylinder turbocharged and charge-air-cooled marine diesel

## 🔌 Function

Forms a thermal barrier between high-temperature engine components and the outer engine-cover area. It reduces radiant heat exposure and helps preserve adjacent electrical, rubber and composite parts.

## ⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

- Cracked, split or distorted shield panel
- Loose shield or metallic rattling while the engine is running
- Missing or deteriorated mounting grommets and spacers
- Heat discoloration or damage on nearby covers, wiring or hoses
- Broken mounting points or fasteners that no longer retain the shield securely

## 🛠️ Service Notes

- Fit heat shields before anything else is routed near the exhaust, and check there is clear air space between the shield and every hose, cable, fuel line and belt
- Renew any insulation, gaskets, spacers or standoffs supplied with the shield; a shield clamped flat onto a hot surface loses much of its effect
- Tighten the fixings evenly and only to the figure in the workshop manual for your engine — the tabs and brackets are thin and distort easily
- Never run the engine with a shield missing or loose: bare exhaust surfaces are a fire risk in an engine space and a burn risk to anyone working alongside
- Check the shield and its fasteners whenever the exhaust is disturbed, as vibration works them loose and a rattling shield soon cracks at its mounting tabs
