-   Seat the pipe fully onto its spigots and set each clamp behind the bead before tightening, so pressure cannot push the joint apart
-   Align and support the pipe on its brackets so it is not pulled into tension — a pipe held under strain chafes, cracks and works its clamps loose
-   Check the bore for oil sludge and soot before fitting and clean it out; carried-over oil softens sleeve rubber and blackens a new pipe from the inside
-   Tighten clamps and any flange fasteners to the figures in the workshop manual for your engine, then re-check them after the first run under load
