-   Clean the threads and sealing face in the housing, and check the bore of the connection is clear before fitting
-   Fit a new sealing washer, O-ring or gasket, and where a tapered thread is used seal it with the product the manual specifies rather than winding tape onto a fuel, oil or hydraulic joint
-   Hold the connection at the correct angle for the pipe run as it is tightened, so the pipe meets it squarely instead of being sprung into place
-   Tighten to the figure in the workshop manual, and do not try to cure a weep by pulling the joint up harder — strip it and look at the sealing face
-   Pressure-test or run the system and check for weeping before closing up access, then check the joint again after the first period of running
