-   Clean the threads and sealing faces and check the bore is clear before fitting
-   Fit new sealing washers, O-rings or gaskets where the original had them, and use thread sealant only where the manual calls for it — never on a joint that seals metal to metal on a cone or a machined face
-   Set the elbow so the connection points the way the hose or pipe wants to run, with no strain, kinking or chafing on the line
-   Tighten to the figure in the workshop manual for your engine and hold the mating fitting so it cannot turn with it
-   Bring the system up to working pressure and temperature, check the joint, then check it again after the first proper run
