## 🔌 Function

Closes each intake and exhaust valve and keeps the valve train in contact with the camshaft profile throughout the engine speed range.

-   Valve-train ticking or misfire
-   Loss of compression or power
-   Valve float at higher engine speed
-   Broken spring coils or reduced installed pressure
-   Uneven spring height or damaged retainers/keepers

## 🛠️ Service Notes

-   Renew valve springs as a complete set for the engine rather than replacing individual springs, and never mix new springs with used ones in the same head
-   Check free length and squareness of the new springs against the figures in the workshop manual for your engine, and reject any that are out
-   Fit the spring the specified way up where the coils are closer together at one end or where the spring carries a marking, and use the correct seat and retainer for that spring
-   Fit a new valve stem seal where one is used, and make sure the collets are fully and evenly seated before the compressor is released — then tap the retainer lightly and confirm nothing has moved
-   Keep valves, springs and collets in cylinder order if any used parts are being refitted, and turn the engine over by hand before starting to confirm nothing binds
