-   This is part of the intake flame arresting arrangement on a petrol engine: it must be in place and securely attached to the air intake whenever the engine is run, and it is not optional equipment
-   Never run the engine with the intake open or with the flame arresting parts loose, missing or substituted; on a petrol inboard this is what stops a backfire igniting fuel vapour in the engine space
-   Refit all the sealing and mounting parts so the assembly clamps down evenly with no gap around its face — air drawn in past the arrester bypasses the protection entirely
-   Clean and inspect it at the interval given in the workshop manual for your engine, and renew rather than clean anything that is damaged, distorted or corroded through
-   Run the compartment blower and check for a smell of fuel before starting whenever intake work has been done
