-   Clean the groove, register or bore the ring sits in and remove any burr or old sealing residue before fitting — debris in the groove stops a ring seating and is a common cause of a repeat leak
-   Open or compress the ring only as far as it needs to go on; overstretching or twisting it during fitting distorts it permanently
-   Check the ring is fully seated all the way round its groove or register, and the right way round where its faces differ, before closing the assembly up
