-   Work clean on the fuel side and cap the openings while the fitting is out — dirt introduced here ends up at the injection equipment
-   Renew the sealing washer or O-ring rather than reusing it, and check the seat and the threads are clean and undamaged
-   Tighten to the figure given in the workshop manual for the fitting; a nipple overtightened into an alloy housing distorts the seat and will never seal properly again
-   Bleed the fuel system afterwards and check the joint for weeping and for air being drawn in, both with the engine stopped and running
