-   Fit it the right way round and to the correct fall — these units are directional, and the run must let water drain away and never allow it to run back towards the engine
-   Use two corrosion-resistant clamps on each wet exhaust hose joint, staggered so the screw housings are not in line, and check the hose ends are clean, sound and pushed fully home over the spigot
-   Check the whole exhaust run and its hangers while the muffler is out — old soot, water staining or a sagging hose downstream tells you why the last one failed
-   Where a drain plug is fitted, use it to drain the unit for winter layup, and check for leaks and unusual noise once the engine has been run and the system is hot
