-   Inspect the flexible coupling, shift linkage, control cable and mountings while the gear is accessible; worn ones will undo the benefit of the new parts
-   Refill with the oil grade and quantity specified for your reversing gear, then recheck the level after a short run once the new parts have taken up oil
-   Confirm the gear engages fully and cleanly in both ahead and astern and returns properly to neutral before the boat is used
