Draws raw water in through the inlet and drives it through the heat exchanger and out with the exhaust, carrying the engine's heat overboard.

-   Temperature climbing with a weak or absent stream from the exhaust
-   Rattle, squeal or grinding from the pump
-   Salt crust or a weep at the pump's telltale drain
-   Impeller found with vanes torn, set or missing
-   Wear plate and cover scored, dropping the pump's output

-   Account for every impeller vane before running the engine - the missing pieces lodge in the heat exchanger and block it
-   Renew the impeller, cover gasket and o-ring as a set, and check the strainer and hoses for the restriction that killed it
