## 🔌 Function

Cranks the engine to start it, engaging the flywheel ring gear and releasing once it fires.

## ⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

- Slow cranking or no crank at all

- Grinding on engagement from worn pinion or ring gear teeth
- Starter staying engaged after the engine fires
- Brushes worn or the commutator burnt

## 🛠️ Service Notes

- Check battery voltage and cable connections first — volt drop produces every symptom of a failing starter
