# 3854864 Counterhold | Genuine Volvo Penta Part

## 🔧 Product Description

Genuine Volvo Penta counterhold, published at 0.773 kg. Volvo's own special tools listing gives it a named job: removing and installing the pinion nut on the vertical shaft, working with handle 3850609. It is classed as an overhaul tool. Counterhold 3849660 at 0.689 kg is listed for the pinion nut and also runs on handle 3850609, so the vertical shaft wording is what separates the two. It supersedes part number 3850615, which was catalogued earlier as a retainer, so an older reference to that number may have been pointing at a component rather than at this tool.

## ⚙️ Key Features

- Listed by Volvo for removing and installing the pinion nut on the vertical shaft
- Used with handle 3850609
- Supersedes 3850615, catalogued earlier as a retainer
- Overhaul class tool
- 0.773 kg

## 🔌 Function

Holds the vertical shaft still against the torque applied to its pinion nut, so the load goes into the fastener rather than through the gears.

## ⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

- Working faces worn, burred or rounded off
- Tool slipping off under torque
- Bent or sprung body that no longer holds true
- Markings worn away so the tool can no longer be identified

## 🛠️ Service Notes

- Handle 3850609 is a separate order and is needed to use this tool
- Check whether your procedure calls for this counterhold or 3849660, since both cover a pinion nut
- An old parts reference to 3850615 should be checked before ordering, since that number was listed as a retainer
