Meters crankcase gases back into the inlet at a controlled rate so the crankcase stays under slight vacuum instead of pressurising.

-   Oil pushed out past seals, dipstick or filler cap
-   Rough or hunting idle, sometimes with a whistle from the valve
-   Oil mist or sludge collecting in the inlet tract
-   Valve rattling when shaken, or silent because it is gummed solid
-   Emulsion and sludge under the filler cap from poor breathing
