## 🔌 Function

Adds a precise thickness of steel to the stack so a clearance can be brought to specification by selection rather than by machining or adjustment.

## ⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

- Clearance found outside specification at a routine check
- Noise from the assembly the shim sets, changing as the engine warms
- Shim face polished bright, dished or pitted on removal
- Measured thickness that has fallen below the marked figure
- Marking worn or corroded away so the step can no longer be read

## 🛠️ Service Notes

- Measure with a micrometer at more than one point rather than trusting the marking on a used shim
- Record the clearance measured before and after, so the next service knows which step is fitted
