Takes up thermal expansion and movement between two sections of the exhaust run, so the pipework is not stressed as it heats and cools.

-   Bellows section split, torn or blown out
-   Noticeably louder exhaust and a smell of fumes in the compartment
-   Cracks in the pipework either side, from movement the compensator is no longer absorbing
-   Bellows crushed, over-extended or distorted out of line
