# 3802063 Aftermarket BorgWarner K26 Turbo Volvo Penta 42 Series (To 1993) 3802063 860352 | Sawley's Select Marine Parts

🔧 Product Description

Sawley's Select Marine Parts Aftermarket Volvo Penta 42-Series K26 Marine Turbocharger - Replacement for Part Numbers: 3802063 and 860352

A new aftermarket K26 marine turbocharger engineered as a direct replacement for selected early Volvo Penta 42-series diesel engines.

This turbocharger corresponds with BorgWarner service number 53269886496 and is principally used on KAD42, KAMD42 and TAMD42 installations manufactured before the March 1993 turbocharger changeover.

The K26 converts exhaust-gas energy into compressor-wheel speed, supplying pressurised air to the engine intake. On applicable KAD and KAMD engines, it works with the mechanically driven supercharger to provide low-speed response followed by turbocharged boost at higher engine speeds.

🔄 Supersession & Cross Reference

OEM Supersession / Production References:

• Volvo Penta 860352 - Original turbocharger reference

• Volvo Penta 860352R - Exchange or remanufactured reference notation

• Volvo Penta 3802063 - Later Volvo Penta service or exchange reference

• Volvo Penta 861260 / 3802070 - Different later-production turbo family used after the 1993 changeover

Important:

• 861260 and 3802070 are not interchangeable solely because they are later numbers.

• The pre-1993 and post-1993 turbochargers use different specifications.

• Confirm the production date and original turbocharger identification plate before ordering.

🚤 Compatibility

Commonly used on:

• Volvo Penta early 42-series marine diesel engines

• Turbocharged and aftercooled inboard installations

• KAD and KAMD turbo-supercharged sterndrive installations

• Aquamatic propulsion systems

• Engines manufactured before the March 1993 turbocharger changeover

Typically suits:

• Volvo Penta KAD42A

• Volvo Penta KAD42B - early production where 3802063 or 860352 is fitted

• Volvo Penta KAMD42A

• Volvo Penta KAMD42B - early production where the listed turbo numbers are fitted

• Volvo Penta TAMD42B

• Selected TKAMD41 applications specifically using 860352R / 53269886496

Engine specifications:

• Engine Family: Volvo Penta 41 / 42-series application-controlled

• Displacement: Approximately 3.6 litres

• Engine Configuration: Inline six-cylinder marine diesel

• Induction System:

• Turbocharged and aftercooled on TAMD applications

• Mechanically supercharged, turbocharged and aftercooled on applicable KAD / KAMD engines

• Fuel Type: Diesel

• Representative Production Period: Approximately 1991 to March 1993 for the principal 42-series applications

Important fitment note:

• This is the early 6496-series turbocharger.

• Volvo Penta changed applicable 42-series engines to the 6497-series turbocharger around March 1993.

• Later engines commonly use Volvo Penta 861260 / 3802070 and BorgWarner 53269886497.

• Do not select the turbocharger by the engine name alone.

• Confirm the Volvo Penta engine serial number, production date and BorgWarner data plate.

• Check the compressor outlet, turbine inlet, turbine outlet and oil-line orientation against the original unit.

🔌 Function

The turbocharger uses exhaust-gas flow to rotate the turbine wheel and compressor wheel.

Compressed air is delivered through the charge-air cooler and into the inlet manifold, allowing the engine to burn the required fuel quantity efficiently and produce normal torque and power.

On KAD and KAMD installations, the turbocharger works with the engine-driven supercharger. The supercharger provides boost at lower engine speeds, while the turbocharger becomes the primary boost source as exhaust-gas flow increases.

Common signs of turbocharger failure:

• Reduced engine power

• Slow vessel acceleration

• Engine will not reach rated loaded rpm

• Loss of power after the supercharger disengages

• Low or unstable boost pressure

• Excessive black exhaust smoke

• Blue smoke or increased engine-oil consumption

• Oil inside the compressor outlet or charge-air cooler

• High-pitched whistle or siren noise

• Grinding or wheel-contact noise

• Excessive radial or axial shaft movement

• Compressor or turbine wheel damage

• High exhaust-gas temperature

• Corrosion in the water-cooled turbine housing

Installation considerations:

• Confirm that the engine uses the pre-March-1993 turbocharger

• Match Volvo Penta 3802063 / 860352 or BorgWarner 53269886496

• Identify and correct the cause of the original turbo failure

• Replace the engine oil and oil filter

• Inspect or replace the turbocharger oil-feed pipe

• Confirm unrestricted flow through the oil-return pipe

• Clean the charge-air cooler and intake pipework

• Remove oil, carbon and metal debris from the intake system

• Check the air cleaner and crankcase breather

• Inspect the supercharger, clutch and bypass system where fitted

• Inspect the exhaust manifold and mixing elbow for restriction or corrosion

• Flush the turbocharger coolant passages

• Prime the bearing housing with clean engine oil

• Replace the mounting gaskets and oil-line sealing washers

• Establish engine oil pressure before operating at speed

• Check for oil, coolant, intake-air and exhaust leakage

• Verify loaded boost pressure and engine rpm during sea trials
