Volvo Penta Service Kits, Engine by Engine

A marine diesel doesn't ask for much. But once a year — or every couple of hundred hours, whichever your manual calls first — it asks for the same short list: oil and an oil filter, fuel filters, a fresh seawater impeller, and a look over the belts, anodes and coolant. The difference between an easy service and an afternoon of cross-referencing is knowing the part numbers for your engine.

This guide collects them, engine family by engine family, using Volvo Penta's own pre-packed maintenance kits wherever one exists.

What's in a Volvo Penta service kit?

Volvo Penta packs the routine-service wear parts into a single box under a single part number: the oil filter, the fuel filter and the seawater pump impeller, with the gaskets needed to fit them. Every part inside is genuine. For the D4 and D6 the kit goes further — an air filter and a by-pass oil filter are included, and engines of the A to F generations built up to 2019 also get a crankcase ventilation filter in the box.

One order line instead of six is the whole idea. Here's which number belongs to which engine.

D4 and D6

The modern common-rail pair. Kit 21704968 covers D4 engines of generations A to F — all inboard installations, plus Aquamatic and IPS installations of generations A to D. Kit 21704967 does the same for the D6. Later Aquamatic and IPS engines switch to 22383875 (D4) and 22383876 (D6) from a specific serial number — which is the general lesson with these engines: the serial plate decides, not just the model.

Buying loose instead? The full-flow oil filter is 22030848 and the by-pass filter is 22030852 — they look almost identical on the shelf, so go by number, not by eye. The seawater impeller kit is 3588475 for the D4 and 3593573 for the D6, and the see-through-bowl fuel filter and water separator that mounts between tank and engine is 22677639. You'll find all of it in the service parts filtered to D4 — swap the filter to D6 for the bigger engine.

D1, D2 and the MD2010–MD2040

The small saildrive and shaft auxiliaries, old and new, overlap more than most owners expect. One kit, 21189380, covers both the D1-13 and D1-20 and the older MD2010C, MD2020C and MD2030/MD2040 in their later builds — two generations, one box. The D1-30 and D2-40 take 21189422, and the D2-50 through D2-75 take 21189426.

Loose parts carry one trap: two oil filters split this family. The D1-13, D1-20, MD2010 and MD2020 run filter 861473, while the D1-30, the D2 range, and the MD2030 and MD2040 run 3840525. The fuel filter across these engines is 861477, and the impeller kit is 22222936. Start from the D1-filtered service parts and switch the Engine / Drive filter to your own series.

AD31, TAMD31, AD41 and TAMD41

No boxed kit for the much-loved 31 and 41 series — the service is assembled from parts. The maintenance schedule lists oil filter 471034 across the 40- and 41-series engines, and impeller 3583087 serves the 31- and 41-series seawater pumps. Fuel filtration depends on how your boat is plumbed, which is exactly the sort of thing worth a quick phone call. The TAMD41-filtered list covers the rest of the family too.

KAD32 to KAD44 and KAD300

The compressor diesels get their own kit: 877203 is the maintenance kit for the KAD and KAMD 42, 43 and 44 and the KAD300. The earlier KAD32 misses out on the box but shares impeller 3583087 with the 31/41 family. The KAD42-filtered service parts are the place to start.

Oil, coolant and the rest

Filters and impellers are half the service; the other half is what you pour in. Engine oil, gearbox and drive oil, and coolant to Volvo Penta's specification all live in the Oil & Lubrication range, and your engine's manual states the grades and capacities — trust it over any chart on the internet, including this one.

What the kit doesn't cover

A proper annual service looks past the box. While the covers are off, check the drive belts for glazing and cracking, squeeze the coolant and raw-water hoses and eye their clamps, confirm the anodes still have meat on them, and look at the coolant itself — rusty or oily coolant is telling you something a filter change won't fix. None of that is in any kit, and all of it is cheaper to catch in the shed than on the water.

One more habit worth building: service on hours or the calendar, whichever arrives first. A boat that only did twenty hours this year still ran its oil through a winter of condensation and its impeller through a year of sitting under tension. Low hours postpone wear; they don't postpone time.

Match the serial, not just the model

Two engines with the same name on the rocker cover can take different parts — the D4 kits above literally change at a serial number. Before ordering, take thirty seconds to photograph the engine's ID plate. If anything doesn't line up, ring 0412 532 984 with the serial in front of you and we'll confirm the right numbers before you spend a dollar. Parts ship Australia-wide from Kadina, and as the state's authorised Volvo Penta dealer we can also just do the whole service for you.
