🔌 Function

The bearing shells provide the replaceable low-friction surface between the connecting rod and crankshaft journal while maintaining the specified oil clearance.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Knocking from the lower engine
  • Copper or bearing material in the oil
  • Crankpin scoring
  • Excessive bearing clearance measured during overhaul

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Fit the shells dry into clean, dry rod and cap housings with the locating tang in its notch, then oil the running face only — oil or dirt trapped behind a shell stops it bedding and carrying heat away
  • Never file, scrape or dress the shells, the backs of the shells or the cap joint faces; the crush that locks a shell in place depends on those faces being untouched
  • Measure the crankshaft journals and check the clearance you actually have, with a crush-type clearance gauge or a bore gauge and micrometer, against the figures in the workshop manual for your engine — a scored, worn or oval journal will destroy new shells
  • Keep each pair of shells with its own rod and cap, refit caps the original way round, and read the wear pattern on the shells you removed; it usually tells you why the bearing failed
  • Renew the rod bolts where the manual calls for it, tighten by the specified method and sequence, and confirm the crankshaft still turns freely by hand before going any further
  • Volvo Penta's overhaul kits call for 6 off of this part
