🔌 Function

The housing contains and aligns the lower gear train, turns vertical-shaft rotation through 90 degrees and drives the counter-rotating propeller shafts.

• A gear housing is a machined case that fixes the position of the shafts and bearings inside it — treat the bearing seats and mating faces as precision surfaces and never dress them with an abrasive, a file or a scraper
• Shim thickness, bearing preload and gear backlash belong to the housing, so they must be re-measured and re-established with the correct measuring tools when a housing is renewed rather than carried over from the old one
• Fit new seals, O-rings and gaskets throughout, and check that oil galleries and any breather or drain passages in the new housing are clear before assembly
• Assemble clean and lubricated with the correct gear oil, tighten the fasteners in the manual's sequence and to its figures, then turn the drive by hand to confirm the gears run freely
• Pressure and vacuum test the assembled drive for leaks before launch, and check the oil level and condition again after the first run
