Seals a large machined joint on the engine, holding oil, coolant or gas inside as the two faces move and heat against one another.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Leak tracking down the side of the engine from the joint line
  • Fasteners found unevenly tensioned or slack around the joint
  • Gasket crushed on one side and barely compressed on the other, showing a distorted flange
  • Sections burnt, blown or bonded to the face on strip-down
  • Corrosion pitting on either mating face

🛠️ Service Notes

  • A joint this size needs both faces cleaned properly and checked on a straight edge - a bowed flange is the usual reason a new gasket fails again
  • Tighten in the sequence and to the figures in the workshop manual, working out from the centre
  • Fit new - it cannot be reused once it has taken a set
