🔌 Function

The piston seals combustion through the matched ring set, transfers cylinder pressure to the connecting rod and receives cooling oil through the engine's piston-cooling system.

• Incorrect ring width is fitted to the oil groove
• Gudgeon pin or snap ring is worn or damaged
• Serial-controlled piston and ring revisions are mixed

🛠️ Service Notes

• Check the bore or liner condition and measure piston-to-bore clearance against the figures in the workshop manual for your engine before assembly; a new piston in a worn bore will not fix oil consumption
• Observe the piston's orientation mark and fit it the specified way round in the bore, with the connecting rod the correct way about
• Fit the rings the right way up where they are marked, check ring gap and ring-to-groove fit, and stagger the gaps as the manual sets out, then oil the piston, rings and bore and use a proper ring compressor — never lever a piston into a bore, and never reuse old rings on a new piston
• Use new gudgeon pin retainers and new connecting rod bolts or nuts where the manual calls for them, and tighten to its figures and method
• Turn the engine over by hand as you build to confirm free rotation, and run the engine in as the manual directs before applying full load, rather than loading fresh rings hard from cold
