The thermostat controls the lubricating-oil path through or around the cooler according to oil temperature, reducing unnecessary cooling during warm-up and directing oil through the cooler as operating temperature rises.

• Clean the housing and its seat carefully, using nothing that leaves grit or scoring in the sealing face, and check that face is flat and free of corrosion
• Use all the parts the kit provides, including the new seal or gasket, and discard the old ones
• Tighten the housing fixings evenly to the figure in the manual for your engine — an alloy housing distorts or cracks easily
• Refill and bleed the cooling system properly, then run the engine up and confirm it reaches and holds temperature while you watch the joint for weeps; never leave the thermostat out to mask an overheat, as engine flow depends on it
