🔌 Function

Provides a ball-ended pivot for a socket to clip onto, letting the connected part swing through its arc without binding.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

• Socket popping off the ball, or refusing to clip on and stay
• Rattle or knock from the joint
• Ball worn oval, pitted or scored
• Stud loose in its thread, or the thread pulled out of the mounting
• Joint seized with corrosion so it will not swivel

🛠️ Service Notes

• Clean the threads and the seat before fitting, and fit a new stud rather than one whose ball is scored, flattened or worn down
• Tighten to the figure in the workshop manual for your engine and use thread-locking compound only where the manual calls for it; a ball stud that works loose will damage its mounting
• Keep the ball smooth and lightly greased, unless the socket fitting onto it is a dry type that the manual says must not be lubricated
• Press the socket on squarely by hand or with the proper tool — never hammer a gas strut or linkage socket onto the ball
• Check that the strut or linkage moves through its full travel without binding or fouling before putting it back into service
