🔌 Function
The oil seal closes the clearance around the lower-unit shift shaft. It prevents gear lubricant leaking out and blocks water from entering the gear housing during operation.
Common signs of failure:
• Gear lubricant leaking around the shift shaft
• Milky or water-contaminated gear oil
• Gearcase fails pressure or vacuum testing
• Corrosion around the shift-shaft bore
• Gear-lubricant level falling without visible propeller-shaft leakage
