• Slack the tensioner or adjuster right off and roll the belt onto the pulleys by hand; levering a belt over a pulley flange with a screwdriver breaks the cords in the belt side walls
• Check the pulley grooves are clean and unworn before fitting — a groove with a polished, glazed bottom or a worn shoulder will not grip a new belt and will chew it up
• Check pulley alignment and the condition of the tensioner, idler and their bearings while the belt is off
• Tension the belt by the method and to the deflection given in the workshop manual for your engine, then run the engine, stop it and re-check; a new belt beds in and loses tension quickly
• Where two or more belts drive together, renew them as a matched set so the load stays shared
