Antifouling in South Australia: How Often, and Which Type?

Marine growth is not a cosmetic problem. A hull carrying a season of slime and barnacles pushes more water, burns more fuel, loses speed and loads the engine harder — and around the Yorke Peninsula's warm, salty gulf waters, growth gets going quickly once it starts. Antifouling is how moored boats stay ahead of it.

How often should you antifoul in South Australia?

The honest answer starts with where your boat lives.

Trailered boats generally don't need antifoul at all. If the boat comes out of the water after every trip, a freshwater wash-down does the job, and bare gelcoat stays faster and easier to keep clean than any painted bottom. Antifouling a trailer boat is only worth considering if it spends weeks at a time on a swing mooring or in a pen.

Moored and marina-kept boats do. Most moored boats in our waters get hauled and recoated somewhere between every season and every two seasons. Where you land in that range depends on the paint type, how much the boat moves, and the berth itself — the real answer is written on the hull at haul-out. Slipping the boat, looking at what's grown, and recoating before the paint is exhausted beats any calendar rule.

Timing matters too: growth accelerates through the warmer months, so the smart slot for antifouling is late winter or spring — the boat goes back in with fresh paint just as the growth season arrives.

What happens if you stretch it

Fouling arrives in stages, and each stage is worse than the last. First comes the slime film — you'll see it as a green beard at the waterline. Slime alone costs speed and fuel, and it's the welcome mat for what follows: weed gets a grip on the slime, and barnacles get a grip on everything. By the time a hull is carrying hard growth, you're not washing it off — you're scraping it, and every barnacle base that tears away takes antifoul with it, leaving bare patches that foul even faster next time.

Stretching one season into three doesn't just slow the boat. It means a bigger prep job, more paint and more time on the hardstand when the boat finally does come out — the deferred haul-out is nearly always the more expensive one.

Hard or ablative: which type?

Antifoul paints split into two families, and the difference is easy to picture.

  • Hard antifoul cures to a tough shell that holds its shape. It suits faster boats and boats that get scrubbed, because the surface stands up to water flow and cleaning. The trade-off: the spent paint film stays on the hull, building up coat on coat until it eventually needs stripping back.
  • Ablative (self-polishing) antifoul is designed to wear away slowly as the boat moves, constantly exposing fresh biocide — the way soap keeps a fresh surface as you use it. It suits cruising and moored boats with regular use, and it doesn't stack up thick layers over the years. The trade-off: it needs the boat to actually move, and it won't tolerate scrubbing the way hard paint does.

Whichever family you land in, stay inside the maker's recoat and overcoat guidance — and if you're switching systems, check compatibility before the first coat, not after. What about propellers, shafts and drives?

Running gear is its own problem. Ordinary antifoul struggles to hold onto polished, hard-working metal, which is why propellers so often come out of the water wearing a beard of their own. For props, shafts and drive legs we apply Propspeed, a foul-release coating made for exactly this — growth can't get a proper grip on it, and what does attach wipes or washes off.

Two things we check on every antifoul haul-out: the condition of the hull's sealing coat, because antifoul is only as good as what's under it — where the barrier needs attention there's hull sealing and epoxy coating work — and the anodes, which are cheapest to replace while the boat is already out. Reading your own hull

You don't need a slipway to know roughly where you stand. Watch three things through the season: the waterline (a green fringe is the first visible sign), your speed at your usual cruise revs (fouling shows up as lost knots before anything else), and your fuel burn for the same run. When two of those three start drifting, the hull is talking to you. At the next haul-out, look at how much paint is left and how evenly it's gone — that tells you whether your recoat interval is right, too long, or more than you needed.
