Which Anode Does My Volvo Penta Need?

Every boat with metal below the waterline is quietly running an electrical experiment. Put two different metals in seawater, connect them through the hull, and one of them starts dissolving. Sacrificial anodes exist so that the metal doing the dissolving is a cheap, replaceable block — not your drive leg, your propeller or your shaft.
Around here the experiment runs fast. The gulf waters off the Yorke Peninsula are about as salty as seawater gets, and salt water is an excellent conductor. If your boat lives on a mooring or a marina berth, its anodes are working every hour of every day.
Which anode does my Volvo Penta need?
Three questions decide it: the right material for the water you're in, the right locations for your installation, and the exact fit for your drive or shaft. Get all three right and the anodes quietly do their job. Get one wrong and they either waste away in months or, worse, protect nothing at all.
Zinc, aluminium or magnesium?
For decades the standard answer in salt water was zinc. That's changed. Volvo Penta's own guidance now recommends aluminium anodes in both salt and brackish water, and the factory has been steadily replacing zinc part numbers with aluminium ones. Their reasoning is practical: aluminium gives roughly 30% more protective capacity than the same-sized zinc anode, lasts up to 20–40% longer in salt water, and handles brackish water properly, which zinc never did.
Magnesium is the third material, and it's for fresh water only — think Murray River houseboats, not Spencer Gulf. Volvo Penta lists dedicated magnesium anode kits for exactly that use. In salt water a magnesium anode consumes itself at a ferocious rate; in fresh water it's the only material active enough to do the job.
The practical rule: aluminium for the coast, magnesium for the river, and zinc only where you're matching what's already on the boat. Don't mix materials on the same hull — pick a system and replace like with like.
Where the anodes hide on a Volvo Penta boat
Most owners know about the ring anode on the drive. Fewer know the rest of the set:
- Drive anodes. Sterndrives carry their own anode set, matched to the drive model. For the DPH and DPI duoprop drives behind D4 and D6 engines, there's a dedicated aluminium anode kit, part 3588770, with everything for the leg in one bag.
- Propeller shaft anodes. On shaft-drive boats, a nut anode screws straight onto the propeller shaft nut. Volvo Penta lists seven of them, split by shaft diameter and thread type — part 828140 covers 40 mm and 45 mm shafts with the 1 inch Whitworth thread, while its metric siblings run from M16 up to M30. Both the diameter and the thread have to match or the anode simply won't go on.
- Transom anodes. Late-model Aquamatic sterndrive installations with Active Corrosion Protection still carry a transom-mounted back-up anode (part 23291530). It works alongside the powered system, and it's consumed by design — so it's a service item like any other.
- Engine anodes. Many of the classic engines — the 2001 to 2003 series, the MD30 and MD40 ranges, early 31-series and KAD32 — carry a small zinc anode on the engine itself (part 838929 covers a remarkable number of them). Out of sight, easily forgotten, and just as important as the ones on the leg.
When should anodes be replaced?
The working rule of thumb: once an anode is about half gone, it's done. A wasted anode has less surface area and less material to give, and protection falls away well before it disappears entirely. Check them at least annually — more often for a boat that lives in the water year-round.
Two things that undo good anodes: paint and poor contact. Never paint over an anode — a painted anode is electrically asleep. And always fit them to clean, bright metal, because the anode protects nothing unless current can actually flow through the mounting.
If the boat is coming out for antifouling, that's the natural moment to do the full anode round. It's part of what we check during antifoul work on every haul-out.
