Marine Batteries: Start, Deep Cycle or Dual Purpose?

A battery on a boat gets given one of two very different jobs. One is a sprint: throw a huge burst of current at a starter motor for a few seconds, then get topped straight back up. The other is a marathon: feed sounders, lights, radios, fridges and pumps steadily for hours, then accept a deep recharge. Buy the wrong type for the job and it will work — briefly — and then age years in months.
Start, deep cycle or dual purpose?
Start (cranking) batteries are built from many thin plates, which gives maximum surface area for that short, violent burst of current. What they hate is being run flat — deep discharges shed material off those thin plates, and each one costs real capacity.
Deep cycle batteries are the opposite build: fewer, thicker plates that tolerate being drawn well down and recharged, over and over. The trade-off is less sprint — they're not shaped for cranking big engines, and doing it regularly shortens their life.
Dual purpose batteries split the difference: enough cranking punch to start the engine, enough plate to tolerate moderate cycling. They're the honest compromise for boats where one battery has to do both jobs.
Two numbers describe every battery you'll compare: CCA (cold cranking amps — the sprint) and Ah (amp hours — the marathon). Start batteries advertise CCA, deep cycles advertise Ah, and dual purpose batteries quote both.
A tinnie with a sounder
Keep it simple: one marine-rated starting battery. Marine batteries earn the word with construction that shrugs off pounding and vibration, which is the actual killer of batteries in small boats hammering across chop. A sounder and nav lights barely register as a load, so cranking is the only job that matters. The Power Crank marine series is exactly this battery.
A cruiser or overnighter
The moment a fridge, anchor light and stereo run while the engine doesn't, you have two jobs — and the proper answer is two banks: a start battery that does nothing but crank, and a deep cycle house bank that runs the boat, kept apart by an isolator so the morning start is never hostage to last night's fridge. Size the house bank from the loads you actually run; it's the battery you'll replace most often if you get it wrong.
Where space or budget says one battery must do everything, that's the dual purpose case — dual purpose AGM marine batteries are rated for both cranking and cycling in one box.
Electronics-heavy fishing rigs
Live-imaging sounders and electric trolling motors changed the maths — a modern fishing rig can pull a steady draw all day, which is pure deep cycle territory, and usually a dedicated battery separate from the cranking side. AGM deep cycles handle it, and lithium has become the weight-saver's option where the budget allows. Why AGM keeps coming up
AGM (absorbed glass mat) batteries hold their electrolyte soaked in glass matting rather than sloshing free. Sealed, no topping up, no acid to spill, strong vibration resistance, and more mounting freedom — a natural fit for boats. They do want proper charging, so match the charger or engine charging system to the battery type when you upgrade.
How big does a house bank need to be?
Skip the guesswork formulas and do the honest half-hour: list what runs while the engine is off, how many amps each item draws (it's on the label or in the manual), and how many hours each runs in a typical day aboard. Add it up and you have your daily amp-hour budget. Then remember two rules of thumb that protect the battery: lead-acid types age fastest when drawn right down, so buy comfortably more capacity than the bare budget — and every day the bank should get a proper recharge, not a five-minute idle at the ramp. If the budget and the recharge don't balance, that's when a bigger bank, a smarter charger or solar enters the conversation.
Keeping whichever one you buy alive
- Winter is what kills boat batteries in SA — months of sitting, not use. Keep them charged through the off-season with a maintenance charger, or at least a monthly top-up.
- Keep terminals clean and tight — a fine crust of corrosion steals cranking amps invisibly.
- Secure the battery properly in a box or tray; vibration damage is cumulative and silent.
- Match physical size, terminal layout and hold-down before falling in love with a spec sheet.
