The O-ring seals the driveshaft bearing housing against the gearcase bore so lubricant remains inside the lower unit and water cannot bypass the housing.
Common signs of failure:
• Gear oil leaking around the driveshaft carrier
• Water contamination in the gear lubricant
• Gearcase fails pressure or vacuum testing
• O-ring cut or pinched during carrier installation
• Corrosion around the bearing-housing bore
