Common signs of failure:
• Starter does not operate while the engine is in neutral
• Engine starts while the control is in gear
• Neutral indication is incorrect
• Engine-management system reports an invalid gear position
• Switch plunger sticks
• Switch operates only when the linkage is moved by hand
• Connector terminals are corroded or loose
• Wiring is damaged near the shift mechanism
• Intermittent no-crank condition occurs
