🔧 Product Description

This is a genuine Volvo Penta charge regulator from the alternator, charging, electric motor and electric drives group. It regulates the alternator's output voltage so the battery bank is charged correctly and downstream electrical equipment is protected from over- or under-voltage. It is specified for the TAD1240GE, TAD1241GE and TAD1242GE engines.

🚤 Compatibility

Typically suits:

  • Volvo Penta TAD1241GE
  • Volvo Penta TAD1242GE
  • Volvo Penta TAD1240GE
  • Engine Family: TAD
  • Year Range: Approximately 1980s-2000s, alternator-number controlled

⚙️ Key Features

  • OEM Volvo Penta part number 1089451
  • System group: Alternator, Charging, Electric Motor, Electric Drives
  • Net weight approximately 0.14 kg
  • Fits TAD1240GE, TAD1241GE and TAD1242GE series engines
  • Engine type: Volvo industrial and heavy-vehicle diesel

🔌 Function

The charge regulator controls the alternator field current to hold generated output at the correct charging voltage across varying engine speeds and electrical loads. This keeps the batteries properly charged while preventing overcharging and voltage spikes on the engine's electrical system.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Battery persistently undercharged or flat despite adequate running time
  • Overcharging, with batteries gassing, boiling or emitting a sulphur smell
  • Charge warning lamp illuminated or flickering while the engine is running
  • Erratic or fluctuating system voltage readings at the instrument panel
  • Repeated failure of bulbs or sensitive electronics due to unstable output voltage

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Isolate the batteries before disconnecting anything in the charging circuit, and take care not to short the output terminal against structure
  • Before condemning a regulator, clean and check the battery terminals, main earth or return connections and the sensing wiring — poor connections and corroded earths cause most of the charging complaints blamed on regulators
  • Check the battery itself is serviceable and the drive belt is in good condition and tensioned by the method given for your engine; a slipping belt looks exactly like a charging fault
  • Mount the regulator so its mounting face is clean and it sits flat with the airflow it was designed for — these units rely on getting rid of their own heat
  • After fitting, measure the charging voltage with a meter across the battery with the engine running and compare it against the figures in the workshop manual for your engine, rather than judging by a panel lamp
