• Warming the inner race evenly in oil or a purpose-made bearing heater lets an interference fit slide on without hammering — never heat a bearing with a flame, and stay within the temperature the manufacturer's instructions allow
• Check the shaft and housing seats for wear, scoring and burrs first; a slack or damaged seat will destroy a new bearing quickly
• Lubricate with the grade specified for that position, and where the bearing takes an adjustable preload or endfloat — tapered roller bearings especially — set it by the workshop manual procedure rather than by feel
