A lock washer sits under a nut or bolt head to maintain clamping tension and resist loosening caused by engine vibration and heat cycling. It helps keep the fastened joint tight and correctly preloaded in service.

- Fastener working loose or losing torque between service intervals
- Visible flattening, spreading or loss of spring tension in the washer
- Corrosion, pitting or scaling that prevents the washer seating flat
- Cracking or fracture of the washer body
- Fretting marks or elongation around the bolt hole on the mating surface
🛠️ Service Notes
- Lock washers are single-use: the spring or the lock is set by the first tightening, so fit a new one whenever the fastener is disturbed
- Refit in the same arrangement as the parts came off, with the washer bearing on a clean, flat, undamaged seat
- Where the washer is a tab or bent type, bend the tab firmly against a flat of the fastener after final tightening, and never bend the same tab back and forth twice
- Tighten the fastener to the figure in the workshop manual for your engine — a lock washer secures a correctly tightened fastener, it does not compensate for a slack one
