This is the oil filter housing from the lubricating and oil system of Volvo Penta's inline-six D9, D11 and D13 engine families, along with the related TAD industrial and generator-set variants. It forms the mounting head that carries the engine oil filter and routes pressurised oil between the filter and the engine's oil galleries. Supplied as a single cast housing with a net weight of approximately 4.82 kg.

🔌 Function

The oil filter housing provides the sealed mounting point for the engine oil filter and carries pressurised oil to and from the filter element. It keeps filtered oil flowing to the engine's lubrication galleries and maintains the sealing interface between the filter and the engine block or oil cooler assembly.

⚠️ Common Signs of Failure

  • Oil weeping or dripping from the housing-to-block sealing face
  • Cracks or porosity in the casting causing external oil loss
  • Damaged or stripped filter mounting threads preventing the filter from sealing
  • Low or fluctuating oil pressure caused by internal leakage or a failed bypass passage
  • Oil contamination or residue build-up around the filter head after running

🛠️ Service Notes

  • Renew every gasket, O-ring and sealing washer that belongs to the housing; do not reuse them, and make sure old gasket material is fully removed from both faces
  • Clean the mating faces with something that will not score or dig into the metal, and do not use abrasives that leave grit behind in an oil gallery
  • Check the housing internally before fitting, along with any drain plug, sensor seat, bypass or cooler connection it carries, and make sure all threads and ports are clean and clear
  • Tighten evenly and progressively to the figure and sequence in the workshop manual for your engine — these housings and their threads are easily distorted or stripped by overtightening
  • Fit a new oil filter, refill with the specified oil, then run the engine and confirm oil pressure comes up and stays up before looking for leaks, and check the joint again once hot
