• Lock washers are single-use: the spring or the lock is set by the first tightening, so fit a new one whenever the fastener is disturbed
• Refit in the same arrangement as the parts came off, with the washer bearing on a clean, flat, undamaged seat
• Where the washer is a tab or bent type, bend the tab firmly against a flat of the fastener after final tightening, and never bend the same tab back and forth twice
• Tighten the fastener to the figure in the workshop manual for your engine — a lock washer secures a correctly tightened fastener, it does not compensate for a slack one
