- Clean the faces and remove any burr from the shaft, bore or seat; grit or a raised edge under a spacer throws out the very dimension it is there to control
- Fit the spacer the correct way round where its faces differ, with any chamfer or radius toward the mating component, and confirm it sits flat and square
- Recheck free movement and the specified clearance or preload after the spacer is in place, before the assembly is finally closed up
