🔧 Product Description
This is a genuine Volvo Penta shim in the 0.50 mm thickness, used to set and correct clearances during assembly and adjustment work on older MD-series marine diesel engines. Shims are supplied in graded thicknesses, and this one is specifically the 0.50 mm size, so the required thickness must be confirmed before ordering. Fitment covers the classic MD, MB and AQD single- and multi-cylinder engine families.

⚙️ Key Features
- OEM Volvo Penta part number 120073
- Thickness: 0.50 mm
- Net weight approximately 0.0023 kg
- Fits classic MD, MB and AQD series marine diesel engines
- Supplied as an individual shim, sized by thickness
- Engine type: Volvo Penta early small marine diesel / petrol engine with mechanical reverse gear
🔌 Function
A shim is a precision spacer inserted between two components to establish or restore a specified clearance, preload or alignment. Selecting the correct thickness ensures mating parts sit at their designed operating tolerance.
⚠️ Common Signs of Failure
- Measured clearance or endfloat outside the specified tolerance during assembly
- Visible wear, scoring or deformation of the shim face
- Increased noise, knocking or vibration from the affected assembly
- Repeated loosening or uneven loading of the components being shimmed
- Corrosion or pitting causing an inconsistent seating surface
🛠️ Service Notes
- Shims are supplied in graded thicknesses and exist to bring a setting into specification, so measure with a micrometer and select the thickness the setting procedure for your engine calls for rather than matching one by eye
- Note which shim came from which position on removal and keep them identified — once an assembly has bedded in, shims are not interchangeable between positions
- Check both faces are clean, flat and free of burrs, corrosion and old sealant before fitting; dirt trapped under a shim shifts the setting as surely as the wrong thickness does
- Discard any shim that is dished, cracked, pitted or fretted rather than reusing it, and make sure no old shim has been left behind in the recess
- Recheck the clearance or setting after the assembly is tightened down, because clamping load can change the measurement you took loose
